Born on February 13, 1923, Yeager joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in the summer of 1941.  During the intense air combat over Europe, he flew P-51 Mustangs, all of which were named  some variation of “Glamorous Glennis” after his wife.  His many achievements as a fighter pilot included acedom and the downing of a ME-262 while flying his favorite P-51.  Shot down over France, he managed to escape with the help of the French Resistance Movement.  But it was after the war that his name became a household word, when he became the first man to break the sound barrier.  General Yeager’s many awards include a “Peacetime” Congressional Medal of Honor, and a Harmon International Trophy.
