On August 1, 1943 U.S. bombers based in North Africa and flying at low altitude attacked the Ploesti Oil Complex in Romania. A total of 178 B-24’s were employed on the mission. Of these, 41 were downed by the German and Romanian defenses. Another 13 were lost through a variety of other causes. Damage to the refineries was severe in places but was eventually repaired. No less than five Congressional Medals of Honor were awarded for this very crucial raid.
