Sugar Loaf Hill

SKU: SUGARLOAF
In May of 1945, the Japanese fortified a series of hills north and east of Naha on Okinawa.  The capture of these positions was essential.  It fell to the 6th Marine Division to capture this area in order to outflank the major Japanese line on southern Okinawa and bring the campaign to a successful conclusion.  One of the fortified hills was Sugar Loaf.  In a ferocious battle lasting until May 18, 1945, the marines eliminated all Japanese resistance on Sugar Loaf.  The intense fighting cost the Marines 2,662 causalities and opened the way to victory in this the most costly battle of the war in the Pacific.
