Commissioned in May 1943, this American battleship served as the flagship of the Third Fleet during the latter part of the Pacific Campaign in WWII.  She survived the conflict and was still in service in the 1980’s when she was sent to Lebanon, from 1983 - 84.  The New Jersey was involved in several assaults including those on Iwo Jima and Okinawa.  She was modernized during the 80’s and equipped with cruise missiles.  She returned to active duty on several occasions in the postwar period and did not finally leave the U.S. Navy until november 1991.
