Richard Hetherington O'Kane served as Executive Officer of the USS WAHOO under the indomitable Mush Morton before assuming command of the USS TANG.  Updated figures show that during five war patrols, O'Kane was responsible for depriving Japan of 27 vessels.  This made him the leading skipper and he probably sank more enemy tonnage than any other American submarine commander during the Pacific War.
