USS TANG: BALAO class submarine which under the command of Commander R.H. O'Kane carried out 5 war patrols during the Pacific War.  During this time in areas as widely separated as Truk, the Yellow Sea and the Straits of Formosa, TANG wreaked havoc upon the Japanese merchant and naval forces.  When the submarine records were added up, revised by JANAC and re-revised by Commander Alden more recently TANG's total came to 27, making O'Kane the top scoring submarine ace of the U.S. Navy.  In addition TANG was credited with saving the lives of 22 aviators off Truk during a lifeguard mission.  She was also one of only three ships in the U.S. Navy to receive two Presidential Unit Citations.
