Resulting from a 1946 USAF demand for a long range escort fighter, the F-101 was designed as an escort for SAC’s B-36 intercontinental bomber. However, SAC participation was withdrawn before the F-101s first flight in September 1954, and the F101A entered service as a long range fighter with limited nuclear strike capability with TAC early in 1957. It’s front line service was short lived, the subsequent RF-101 B/C reconnaissance versions being the long life variants. A strengthened fighter version with nuclear LABS delivery system, was the F-101 C of which only 47 were produced for TAC. The last Voodoos in service were the Canadian CF-101’s and were retired in 1984.
